NA VA News (Part One)

Alice Blue is Finally Being Released?

Via a Facebook group, a few days ago we learned that a movie shot in late 2005 involving two VAs is finally done the editing process and is being shopped around to film festivals including the Toronto International Film Festival and the Berlin International Film Festival. The Death of Alice Blue is a vampire movie intermingled with the advertising environment. Alice learns of the secret underminings of her advertising agency from her friends in an elite group known as "The Resistance", and also that she is genetically predisposed to become a vampire. It stars Barbara Radecki (Serena's Mom, Sailor Neptune) as Sherry, and Katie Griffin (Sailor Mars #1) as Katie. Katie's husband, rocker Michael Kulas, also contributed original music to the film. This film was also shot in 35mm and converted to HD for effects. Fans can check out a trailer here, and we will keep you posted once we hear that this film has been selected for a festival!

Mary Long in New Play!

Mary Long (Molly Baker) can currently be seen on stage at the Victoria Place Petrolia in Petrolia, Ontario. In Separate Beds, she plays two wives who take a cruise ship vacation along with their husbands to celebrate their wedding anniversaries. You read right, two wives - she is playing both Beth Stone and Twink Fraser. Beth is a movie actress married to an orthodontist, and Twink is the co-owner of a hardware store along with her husband. The play is about two different couples, and her costar Ralph Small plays both her characters' husbands. The revolving set features a cabin suite and a breakfast deck and both actors are transformed into other characters through different clothes, hair, speech, mannerisms and, of course, names. This definitely sounds interesting and from what we have read, the show sounds pretty good. The director also had lots of praise for the stars, saying: "I am indeed fortunate to have two artists of the calibre of Mary Long and Ralph Small to portray four wonderful characters. They are both gifted actors and talented comedians, and they bring the script to life brilliantly." Mary loves the play, and said that this is the playwright's (Mary Jane Cruise) best job, and added "Five seconds into the play, audiences will relate immediately to this first couple. It won't be long before they recognize themselves." The two even have their own rendition of Sonny and Cher's I've Got You Babe! The play runs until August 9th, and Mary will reprise the roles later this year when the show hits Orangeville.

North American VA Sightings March 2009 - Part 1!

Vampires, Kiddie Music, VAs Reuniting on a Daring New Cartoon, and A Dash of Sugar!

Hey Moonies! I have a feeling this is going to have to be broken into at least 2 parts, but we have EXCLUSIVE BREAKING NEWS that I just couldn’t wait to share with you all. So far this week is shaping up to be pretty big - yesterday we heard from one of the voice actors on Pretty Cure, Will Wood, today, we heard from someone we haven’t heard from in a really long time... who knows what else this week will bring? We on staff can’t remember the last time we’ve had so many consecutive exciting events happen on this site! By the way, our favicon was replaced with something else last night - what do you guys think? Our old one was craptacular, and our old host disappeared off the web so I had to create a new one.

Alice Blue Screening All Around North America!

We’re really happy that a movie that’s been followed since the SOS days is finally moving up in the cinema circuit. Vampire flick The Death of Alice Blue (Part I - The Bloodsucking Vampires of Advertising) is going to be screened at film festivals all over North America in the next few months! This film features Katie Griffin (Sailor Mars #1) and Barbara Radecki (Sailor Neptune, Serena’s Mom) in the supporting roles of Katie and Sherry respectively. There are also songs featured in the film from Katie’s indie rockstar husband, Michael Kulas! The film will be screened at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York to screen as part of CANADA FRONT: NEW FILMS showcase on March 20th and March 22nd , The Kent Film Festival in Kent, Connecticut on March 28th, The Atlanta Film Festival in Atlanta, Georgia sometime between April 16th and 25th, and WorldFest Houston in Houston, Texas sometime between April 17th and 26th. For more information, check out the official website and group on Facebook! Best of luck to the film at all of these festivals!

Jen Gould’s Music Soup Continues to Warm!

Jen Gould (Sailor Saturn) has a career that is completely the opposite of her character in Sailor Moon - she is a children’s entertainer, and released a CD last year entitled Music Soup. The CD won a Juno for Best Children’s Album in 2008 and she has performed many concerts in the Toronto area. More recently, one of our readers Amanda P. learned of an appearance at a children’s Purim party at Leo Baeck Day School on February 22nd! We listened to a few samples of her songs and we have to say, they are definitely creative and would be a hit to any children under the age of 7! You guys can check out videos of her performing on YouTube here, here, here, here and here!

Breaking News: SPOT SUGAR IN FUNNY PEOPLE!

This afternoon we heard from none other than Stephanie Beard (Rini #2) and we can confirm the rumors are true! Stephanie appears in a non-speaking role in Adam Sandler’s latest movie, Funny People. She revealed to us exclusively: "It's true!!! i don't have any lines, but you can catch me sitting beside Adam Sandler in the Thanksgiving dinner scene!!" The film will be released on July 12th, 2009, and we will definitely try to see it as soon as it is out to spot Sug, and we hope that our readers will too! She isn’t sure if the scene was kept, and tells us “but i do know this; it was so exciting to be on set with such amazing comedians!!” We only hope Sug will continue to conquer Hollywood - we can only surmise what is going to come next!

And for last, we have to hide this next sighting behind the jump. Four VAs are reuniting for a new cartoon that is definitely for older readers only!

The Dating Guy to Premiere Soon on Teletoon’s Detour!

Emilie-Claire Barlow (Sailor Mars #2, Sailor Venus #2), Julie Lemieux (Sammy, Young Darien, Peruru), Kathleen Laskey (Birdie) and Jill Frappier (Luna) are all playing various roles in a new Canadian Adult Comedy called The Dating Guy , all about 4 guys and their conquests for women. Yes, this show is about those scuzzy guys you find at the bar every weekend looking to score a one night stand! Each episode promises to take the viewers through an extreme aspect of the twenty-something dating scene. The show also plans to have an interactive aspect to it, with a play on social networking on their website called "Blackbook". This sounds very exciting and we’re looking forward to hearing all of our VAs on this show to see what their characters are like! It’s not common to see them doing shows aimed for adults! The show will premiere later this year on Teletoon's Detour block.

More VA Sightings for October 2007!

Hey Moonies, The Negaforce is On A Roll!

To remind you all, Maria Vacratsis (Negaforce) has been nominated as part of the cast of Showcase’s Rent a Goalie in this year's Gemini Awards. She plays the politician Firstman, who is more of a hindrance than a help in the hit show. Maria was also seen playing a pawnshop owner in the recent action-thriller Shoot 'Em Up starring Clive Owen, Paul Giamatti, and Monica Bellucci. This one was about a former soldier who is thrown into a conspiracy when he offers to protect the child of a mother being targeted by a hitman. The winners for certain awards have already been announced, but this one is part of the big awards show taking place in Regina, Saskatchewan. The host of the event is popular Canadian TV personality George Stroumboulopoulos. The awards will be airing live from Regina, Saskatchewan this Sunday on CBC. Check you local listings - good luck Maria! The show starts it’s second season on Canada’s Showcase on Monday.

Lyon Smith Continues Sound Design!

Until this Tuesday, Lyon Smith’s (Sapphire) work can be heard during the Tarragon Theatre’s production of Generous. Generous is a comedy that asks the question "What happens when members of society not known for their generosity become overwhelmed with the desire to help?" This is reflected when the major political party loses a non-confidence vote. We have a feeling this is based on recent events in Canada’s Parliament. After this, Lyon barely gets a break before he has to get to work doing sound design for Theatre & Company’s production of A Christmas Story, which runs from December 6th - 23rd. This one is a stage adaptation based on the film of the same name from 1983. Both productions are in Toronto and we would love to hear from fans who attend either of them!

Finally, a Trailer for Alice Blue!

This sighting takes us all way back. The Death of Alice Blue: Part 1: the Bloodsucking Vampires of Advertising finally has a trailer out! Unfortunately, a revamped website and the trailer still hasn’t given any word of a release date for this movie. Barbara Radecki (Sailor Neptune, Serena’s Mom) plays Sherry, and Katie Griffin (Sailor Mars #1) plays the role of Katie. We seriously don’t know any more than that - it’s been four years since this movie has been on the Sailor Moon VA radar and there is still no word on a release date. And we’re not the only ones who are wondering where this movie is. We inquired to Michael Kulas (Katie Griffin’s husband) earlier this week and he also has no idea when this movie is out. We’re also sad that whoever put the trailer together didn’t use any of Michael’s music in it. We have a feeling the blonde with the shorter hair might be Barbara, but we watched it over and over and could not spot Katie in it at all. Considering this is supposed to be the first film of many, we have to wonder what’s going on to delay the release for this long and if/when the sequels will be shot.

North American VA Update: July 2009!

Hi Moonies! We've got another North American VA exclusive for you all at the end (we always save the best things for last)!

The Death of Alice Blue to Finally Have Canadian Premiere!

A movie we have been following for a very long time is finally going to premiere in its home country! The Death of Alice Blue (part I - The Bloodsucking Vampires of Advertising) has been invited for its Canadian premiere to the Montreal World Film Festival. This one runs from August 27th to September 7th, and we'd tell you more except that as of this writing none of the films showing this year have been announced on the site. We wonder if any of the VAs in this one (Barbara Radecki, Katie Griffin and her husband Michael Kulas) are going to attend? Congratulations to Park Bench and Alex Appel for finally getting this movie a premiere in Canada and here's hoping it gets a distributor so the rest of us can see it soon!

A Sapphire Shines Again!

Lyon Smith (Prince Sapphire) shared some news and stories with us! He has his own official site now which we encourage fans to go visit - he posts a lot of really cool links to his works too! While his time on Sailor Moon wasn't as pleasant as many fans may think it might have been, he is also excited about a possible redub and if he was given the chance he would do it again! Hey FUNImation, are you reading this? Consider Canada for a re-dub! This is our second official VA that has confirmed to be interested in reprising their role for a re-dub of Sailor Moon (this is great news for Operation Moonrise)! Some fans may not know this behind-the-scenes story, but when Lyon was first cast he was called in to replace Tuxedo Mask. It was his first series that he had landed as a regular! At the time though, production was too intense (and we've heard similar stories from other actors from those first years). But the show did launch his voice career, and since then he has voiced memorable roles in other anime, cartoons and video games! He played Pythias in Mythic Warriors: Guardians of Legend, the Mysterious Guy in Biohazard 0, Kevin and Michael in Beyblade, Ed in Get Ed, Magma in Spider Riders, and he is currently appearing in Bakugan Battle Brawlers which has been a huge hit with the kids all over North America! In the first season he played Masquerade, and in the second season (which is recording right now) he plays Prince Hydron. And this prince's voice is based on none other, but the Japanese voice of Prince Diamond! We really admire Lyon Smith for watching episodes of Sailor Moon in Japanese - we're not sure how many others have (we know Roland Parliament did for sure). He will be reprising his role as Masquerade for the upcoming Bakugan video game. And there's even more Lyon to be heard in CBC's Magi-Nation - he plays the hero, Tony Jones! In another awesome coincidence, Lyon was also a student of Roland's!

Lyon Smith is also a budding musician - he writes his own music and also helps out with sound design for plays in Toronto. He currently composed music and worked sound design for the play A Singularity of Being, which is loosely based on the life of Steven Hawking. Lyon's music is really worth checking out if you're into alternative rock! He covered the song You Believe in Rock and Roll for a David Bowie tribute album (2.CONTAMINATE) which is on iTunes. He has his own site for fans to check out his music - and altrock fans will take a liking! There's even a bit of experimental and mashing in there too. And best of all, all the music is free! He is also on MySpace as well. We once again encourage all our readers to check out his music.

Special thanks to Lyon and best of luck on your upcoming works!

The Death of Alice Blue Wins Some Awards!

But Does This Mean The Film Is Any Closer To A Wider Release?

Well, it finally looks like a movie that was shot years ago involving two VAs is finally on a roll. Vampire flick The Death of Alice Blue won three awards at The Accolade Competition! The movie won an Award of Excellence for Leading Actress (Alex Appel), as well as two Honorable Mentions. One for direction (Park Bench) and the other for Feature Film. The movie features Barbara Radecki (Sailor Neptune, Serena's Mom, Queen Serenity) as Sherry, and Katie Griffin (Sailor Mars #1) as Katie. Katie's husband, Michael Kulas, also composed music for the movie. The official Facebook group still says that the movie is being submitted to different festivals, but no word yet on which festivals it has been accepted to as of this writing, or if there has been a distribution deal. We will keep you posted as soon as we find out more!

North American VA Update for November 2009 - Part 1

Hey, everyone. We have quite a few recent sightings of the North American voice actors for you! This post covers recent and current projects, but we'll also be letting you know about upcoming projects in part two of this multi-part article. Keep an eye out for more sightings!

Dennis Akayama (Malachite) will be appearing in Gangster Exchange, coming to theatres on November 20th. The action comedy is about two men trying to prove themselves as worthy of promotion in the Yakuza and the Bosnian mob.

Kirsten Bishop (Zoicite/Emerald/Kaori Knight) is starring in A Touch of Grey, a film about four women coming to terms with being middle-aged. The film premiered in Canada at the Cinefest Sudbury International Film Festival on September 23rd and at the La Femme International Film Festival in the US on October 16th. On Novemeber 13th, it also aired at the Windsor International Film Festival. Visit the film's official website for more information about the film, clips and trailers, and upcoming showings.

Katie Griffin (Sailor Mars #1) recently appeared in Too Late to Say Goodbye, an original movie for Lifetime Movie Network. The movie is based on the best selling book by Ann Rule, which was based on a true story of a real-life murder investigation. In the movie, Rob Lowe plays a successful dentist who appears to have the perfect marriage. After his wife, Jenn, finds out about his affair, she is soon found dead. Jenn's sister, Heather, suspects that the death was not a suicide – although it appeared to be – and decides to investigate the truth. Katie plays a character named Dara.

Katie is also starring in The Death of Alice Blue (previously mentioned on Moon Chase) with Barabara Radecki (Sailor Neptune). This film about an advertising agency run by vampires is currently airing at various film festivals. Here are some of the upcoming showings: FANCINE, Malaga, Spain, Nov. 18-26; SANTA FE FILM FESTIVAL, Dec. 2-6; MYRTLE BEACH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, Dec. 1-5; CAMBOFEST, Cambodia, Dec. 4-6.

Tracey Hoyt (Rini #1) recently appeared on The Ron James Show. The show is a combination of comedy sketches and Ron James performing stand-up routines.

Kathleen Laskey (Birdie) plays Barb Strange on Being Erica. The show follows Erica Strange, a young woman who believes she has a bad life because of the bad decisions she's made. Her therapist transports her back in time to previous significant moments in her life so that she, with the knowledge of her present day life, can make better decisions.

Wendy Lyon (Queen Serenity #1) appeared in three episodes of Happy Town as Donna Friddle. The series is about a deputy sheriff confronted with the unsolved mystery of a half-dozen child kidnappings over the past decade in a small town.

Tracey Moore (Sailor Moon #1) is playing the title character in a new series called Zigby. The 3D animated television series is about a zebra and his friends.

Operation Moonrise: Phase One!

This survey is now closed. It will take us a couple weeks to put the results together. Thanks to the over 800 moonies who helped to fill out this survey!

EDIT: For those of you who seem to visit this post wondering where the survey is, it is linked at the bottom. However, if you don't want to read the questions and watch the clips of all the actors below, you can head to the survey by clicking here.

Hello Moonies!

The draught is over! We are beginning a campaign to bring back Sailor Moon!
(We'll be making a banner soon - until then enjoy the lovely music in the background)! EDIT: The music is gone T_T . We had a few complaints over it.

Our first phase is a survey allowing fans to give their opinions on voice actors and actresses for the dub. We have included most major characters, and most major villains. Aside from the English cast which we are all familiar with, we did our research and attempted to find members of Funimation's roster that we thought might be suitable for the dub. It was difficult, some of us based our opinion on the Japanese voices, while some of us tried to find close matches to English dub artists. The survey link is in big bold letters at the bottom of this post. However, before you hit the survey, we have posted the questions below, along with links to streaming video clips (click on each VA's name)of the work of these dub artists, so you can refresh yourselves with what the old ones sounded like, and hear what VAs on Funimation's current roster sound like. We want to thank our friends and fans on the forums who helped us put this together over the last few days!

We have them listed by category below (and these aren't in the order that they are on the survey), but there are actual questions on the survey. Please take the time to really think about your choices before you start. Watch the clips below, although the clips are by no means complete. You are welcome to do your own research on their other roles - we suggest going through Anime News Network's encyclopedia. They seem to have a more complete list of a voice actors roles than IMDB does.

Joel Bergen (Script)
Christopher Neel (Script)
Barry Watson (Producer)
Daniel Cocanougher (Producer)

Ok. No youtube clips for the crew, obviously. We have a few points though. Lisa Lumby-Richards marks the end of the old crew and everyone after that has worked on one or more of these Funimation productions: Ouran High School Host Club, Yu Yu Hakusho, Full Metal Alchemist, and Trinity Blood. These were marked by our staff and friends who helped us find some of the best Funimation adaptations in English. A few things about names you may not know or remember: we featured Roland Parliament's story this morning! John Stocker has also been involved with many cartoons over the years, and we really enjoyed his direction on the movies! Bob Summers wrote the English theme song. Sal Grimaldi was the sound engineer who put everything together in the studio for the episodes - what effects a voice needed, etc. Michael Benghiat composed all of our old English background music from the first two seasons. If you want to hear it again, the majority of it can be found streaming on Rhapsody for free! If you are NOT in the United States, the songs are all on youtube - search for Sailor Moon "The Full Moon Collection". Else you can head on over to SailorMusic.net to hear them! Doesn't hearing this one bring back memories? If you want to really see these come back as they were not included in S or SuperS, please vote Michael Benghiat! Sonski, Thuault, and Hurtubise are all from Optimum Productions. Janice Sonski in particular is responsible for many of the edits made to the series, including making Amara and Michelle (Neptune and Uranus) cousins. Nicole Thuault in the past has skitted around the real reason for the issue. We're not even going to get started on Nicole and Louis, but if you want to, you'll find a lot more about them on Save Our Sailors. While we will give them credit for trying hard with the casting, many of their production decisions were questionable. Lisa Lumby-Richards was a writer throughout every episode and movie.

Sean Schemmel

Which production company would you like to see produce the re-dub?
In-House at Funimation
The Ocean Group
Blue Water Studios

If the dub is produced in-house at Funimation, it may be difficult to get some members of the old cast as a Green Card would be required, as well as membership with the Screen Actors Guild (which many may not have). If the dub is produced in partnership with The Ocean Group or Blue Water Studios, they are based in Canada (and have used American actors before) making it much easier for Canadian VAs to dub. Plus, the Ocean Group has produced many hits over the years, as well as Blue Water Studios.

What would you like to see re-dubbed? Pick as many as you would like, however if you want all of the movies or series redubbed, please select that specific option ("All of ____"). Do not select individual ones if you are selecting these options - this will skew the data!

Sailor Moon (Season 1)
Sailor Moon R (Season 2)
Sailor Moon S (Season 3)
Sailor Moon SuperS (Season 4)
Sailor Moon R: The Movie
Sailor Moon S: The Movie
Sailor Moon SuperS: The Movie
All of the Movies
All of the Series
All of the Movies and the Series

What would you like to see dubbed and/or included on a possible re-release?
(pick as many as you want!)

Missing episodes
Missing specials
Sailor Moon: Sailor Stars (Season 5)
Old Commercials
Footage of Promotional Events in Japan
Behind the Scenes Featurettes

Which music cues (transformation sequences, attacks, etc.) would you prefer hearing in a re-dub?

Original Japanese music cues
Original English adaptation music cues composed by Michael Benghiat of the Music Kitchen

** See the note above in crew for links to the English music cues.

Which would you rather see? (Pick one or the other)

Old productions redubbed and scripted closer to the original Japanese version.
Productions which have never been dubbed.

We are planning a second survey in two weeks - we didn't want to bombard you fans with a huge survey. We think that it will be a lot shorter than this one. This one will deal with the kind of release that fans would like to see. We figured we'd get this one out of the way first.

So now that you've read all the background, now the survey warnings:

1. At the end of the survey are some demographic questions. We need to know this from our fanbase because we are planning to send this data to companies who are involved with Sailor Moon so they know who the series is targeting nowadays and just so they know where all the fans are coming from. We will post the results on this site as well. We're going to put some pretty charts together in Excel too so they look all professional! We are NOT collecting any specific personal data (like your email, name, or contact information). KwikSurvey probably collects IPs so that the same person doesn't do the survey twice, and we know that they won't share that information with anyone else. So please complete the whole survey - it's 28 questions and if you have your plan ready to go then it shouldn't take you more than 15-20 minutes.

2. READ THE QUESTION. Some questions have more than one option available to you and there are also places for some questions to fill in your suggestions.

3. This poll is only going to last for a little over four weeks (June 29th at Midnight Pacific Time), so get voting! Tell your friends, link us in forum signatures, etc. Now is the time for all of the English Dub fans to unite to make their voices heard!

**EDIT** We are now running this until the end of July (the 31st).

4. Join our forums. The next two phases will be letter writing campaigns but the details will only be posted in the Campaigns Forums - only visible to forum members. We're going to also bounce around some ideas and we are welcome to hear your suggestions in there.

Our promise to parents who wish to join the forums on behalf of their kids - we on staff actively monitor our forums and should we learn of any "wierdos" they will be dealt with in a timely fashion. Likewise, if your child is being harassed let us know ASAP. Our forums are currently safe and we hope to keep them that way.

5. Megavideo links require two clicks on the play button. The red one launches a popup, and then it will turn green and smaller on your original window. Then it should play. We're sorry we had to use Megavideo but in some cases we had nowhere else to find clips!

6. Apologies to Funimation, Toei, and Warner Brothers in advance - we realize a lot of the things we are linking to shouldn't even be up on the web - but we encourage our fans if they like what they see to go out and get the releases. We are only linking them so that fans can hear samples of the work of these voice actors.

Oh yeah, have you read the other Survey Guidelines?

So now what are you waiting for?
SURVEY LINK IS HERE!

Thank you for your time in reading this entry, researching your answers , and completing the survey!

NA Voice Actor Update: Fall 2010

Hello readers! Lots of updates for you this time about the North American voice actors. They've been busy! Updates about Emilie-Claire Barlow and Stephanie Beard will be featured in an upcoming post.

Moon Chase Presents: An Interview With Susan Roman! Part 1

Hey Moonies! Here comes our exclusive interview with Susan Roman (Sailor Jupiter). This interview was so long that we have decided to post it in two parts! We think that you will all enjoy what she has to say about her roles in Sailor Moon and beyond! Once again, thanks to Susan Roman for allowing us to interview her, and also for permission to use this new official photo!

MC: Hi Susan! Thanks for allowing us to interview you – how is your summer going?

SR: First of all, I'm SO sorry that it's taken me this long to get back to you. I worked on the questions for about three or four hours when I first received them and, for some reason (ARRGGGHHHH!) – nothing got saved. The next day, everything I'd written had vanished into thin air and it kind of took the wind out of my sails…

Biggest storm of the winter coming in today – and how I wish it WERE summer!

MC: So let's get started where you started – how did you get into acting?

SR: For as far back as I can remember, I wanted to be an actress. When I was seventeen, after I'd graduated from high school, I enrolled in the pre-university theatre arts program at Dawson College in Montreal. Soon after that, Dawson started an actual theatre school at The Dome Theatre in St Henri, and I was part of the first graduating class.

When I was in my second year at The Dome, I auditioned for the National Theatre School because to be accepted at NTS had always been such a HUGE dream of mine. I was accepted, but later found out that I wouldn't be allowed to work professionally while I was a student there. It was the hardest decision of my life – but I decided not to go. And I've never regretted it. I did quite a lot of television work when I was in my third year at The Dome and it was really nice to be able to pay some bills!

MC: One of your first productions were an older Canadian TV series called the Newcomers that featured legendary Canadian Alice Munro at the helm. What was it like to work with such a huge figure in Canada at the start of your career?

SR: By the time we shot the episode I was in, Ms Munro had done her work and was long gone from the scene. In fact, I'd completely forgotten that she was involved in the project – so thanks for reminding me!

MC: What was it like voicing your first ever cartoon character after some experience doing on-camera acting?

SR: It was exactly the same as working in front of a camera – except that there was nobody watching you, which I kind of liked. I've always found cartoon work easier than, say, reading commercial copy. Doing animation allows your imagination to run free. It's all about colour and character and nuance, and trying to create a three-dimensional, believable persona. I love the old Oxford dictionary definition of "to animate" –

To breathe life into; to enliven, to inspire, to inspirit.

That says it all.

Esahc: For someone who been voice acting for so long, what is it about voice acting that makes you stay as a voice actor?

SR: The freedom to be creative, to be part of a team, to really let your imagination fly. It's also very rewarding. I remember when I went to the launch party for Tin Tin. I met a 12 year-old boy who said that he'd been reading the comic books all his life and that he knew exactly how Snowy would sound when he barked – he could hear it in his head. And when I told him that I'd played Snowy, he smiled and gave me a HUGE high five. And you know, his opinion was way more important to me than whatever any of the critics said.

MC: Now it's time to talk Sailor Moon! This year marks the 15th anniversary of the show – what was the casting call and audition like for you back then?

SR: It was a typical casting call, with about eight million actors in the room waiting to go in. I have this theory about auditions: you go in, you do your best, and then you go home and FORGET about it. If you keep thinking about whether or not you got the part or whether or not you did the right read, you'll make yourself crazy. I seriously don't remember 99% of my auditions – which is probably why I'm still vaguely sane.

Corey: Was Sailor Jupiter the only role you auditioned for or played in the series?

SR: Well of course, we ALL wanted to be Sailor Moon! I probably read for every single female part, but I remember thinking that, of all of them, the one I liked the most and the one I gravitated to the most was Sailor Jupiter. In the breakdown, it said that her favourite colour was green and that she loved horses – and I thought, "That's my girl!!"

MC: Lita's voice in the English version is a lot more tomboyish than her original Japanese voice. Your take on her voice really fit her personality well! How did you come up with the right voice for her?
Sparkling Blue: How did you create the voice for Jupiter?
Taylor: Sailor Jupiter is so complex. How did you approach a character who is such a tomboy but who also loves girly things?

SR: When I first heard the original Japanese voices, I found it a little hard to tell them apart. Of course, that could have been more of a language barrier than anything else. Sailor Jupiter's voice is pretty close to my own voice – just a bit raspier - and I think that's why I was cast to play her. All the Sailor Scouts have such distinct voices – if you close your eyes, you can tell right away who's speaking. And you know, I never really thought of her as a tomboy - I thought of her as someone who loved to just get out there and do whatever made her happy. She's punchy and spunky and not afraid to tackle things head on, and maybe you could call that a tomboy characteristic - I don't know.

And thanks for the compliment, MC!

Editor's Note: She speaks of Emi Shinohara, pictured right!

Cody: Did you enjoy recording Lita's/Sailor Jupiter's voice? Saying things like "Supreme Thunder Crash!" and "Jupiter! Thunder Clap, Zap!"

SR: "Jupiter! Thunder Clap! ZAP!!" was my absolute favourite! How can you not feel great after belting out words like that?

Josh2Darien: What is your favorite thing about Lita/Sailor Jupiter?

SR: That she has so many different sides to her personality, the way we all do. She isn't a one-dimensional cardboard character, she isn't a stereotype, and she certainly isn't predictable. I just loved being able to go to so many different places with her.

Cody: What was it like for the first few recordings? Were you nervous around the other cast?

SR: The first few sessions were a bit chaotic because we were all trying to figure out how to work the Rythmo Band. We'd all done dubbing before, but this was a completely new and different technology, and I guess we were a little nervous that we wouldn't be able to get it. And no, I wasn't nervous around the other cast members at all – we all liked each other and we were so happy to be working on such a great project.

MC: Was it difficult to sustain the low tones for a long period of time? Was it also hard to try to maintain some sort of femininity with such a tomboyish voice with the character?

SR: It wasn't hard to sustain Lita's voice because, as I said, her voice is fairly close to my own voice. And that's where theatrical training comes in. You figure out where to position your vocal cords to get the sound that you want and, once that's set in your mind, you can always find it again, no matter what. What was hard were the episodes where we were all screaming a lot. Screaming at full tilt, hour after hour, can be pretty hard on your throat...

I think that femininity isn't about whether your voice happens to be low or high – I think there's more to it than that. To me, Lita is totally feminine. She changes her mind all the time, she talks WAY too much when she meets a cute guy, she loves her friends with all her heart, but she isn't afraid to call them on something when she has to. I think that those are qualities that everyone can relate to as being perfectly female.

MC: What was the most interesting experience you had recording? Did you have to do anything strange in the booth to capture Sailor Jupiter's mood or a state of her voice?
Cody: Do you have any funny recording stories during work on Sailor Moon?

SR: You know, our recording schedule was so tight – there wasn't any time to get in the mood for anything. You just had to jump right in and do what you had to do, which is probably why it all sounded so spontaneous and fresh. But whenever any dramatic scenes came up, we'd take more time to figure out what was really going on and to play all those emotions.

Taylor: From Lita arguing with Mina over boys or talking about how certain guys reminded her of her "old boyfriend", was it fun playing up those comedic moments in contrast to the battle scenes?

SR: Oh yes – I always loved those scenes the best, the comedic ones. The battle scenes kind of melted out your vocal cords and you had to pray that you got everything right the first time!

MC, Anne, and Salvatore: What was your favorite episode or moment in the series?

SR: Without a doubt: Jupiter Comes Thundering In. That was so much fun to do because there were so many wonderful moments, so much action, so much real character to Lita. One minute she was soft and mushy, the next minute she was HIGHLY pissed off when she wasn't winning at the arcade – she was all over the place. I just loved that episode.

Tpirandsailormoon: Have any of you read the manga or saw the original Japanese anime of the series?

SR: No, I haven't read the manga. We did see certain parts of the original Japanese episodes before we started, but it was kind of difficult to get a handle on what was going on because of all the music and the sound effects, and because it was so incredibly fast-paced. And of course, there were no sub-titles, so we couldn't understand a word of what anyone was saying.

Josh2Darien: Have you ever seen the final season (Sailor Stars) of the show? If so, what are your thoughts on it?

SR: No, I haven't seen the final season...

MC: Did you ever imagine from the first day you started to record that Sailor Moon would have become such a huge phenomenon?

SR: That's the easiest question of all: no, no and NO!! Not for one single second did any of us predict that it would become so popular. That was such a hugely fabulous surprise. We all thought it was a great show, but great shows often fizzle out and don't go anywhere, and no one has any idea why.

Esahc: Any particular reason you decided to stay on for Lita's character?

SR: There really wasn't any decision to be made. They phoned my agent and asked to book me, and it fit into my schedule. I really loved doing that series and I was always glad to go back to it.

MC: Last December in Japan, the 5 actresses who played the 5 Sailor Scouts all got together for a reunion to celebrate the launch of the half-season boxsets in Japan. A lot of them spoke about how they felt for their characters during the worst battles they had to fight – did you ever feel like this was the case for you sometimes during the recording sessions?

SR: Those sailor scouts got banged around a LOT! I was always wincing during the battle scenes, and that was before any of the sound effects were added – which made it all sound even more painful.

ChibiGinger: Do you ever run into the other voice actress/actors of Sailor Moon? And what is it like?

SR: Well, Karen Bernstein and I keep in touch – I think she's such a talent, with that wonderful crystal-clear voice that always sounds so sweet and genuine. (She and I did Little People together, too.) And I run into Katie Griffin at auditions all the time (and ditto for Katie, by the way: a hugely talented actress - and she's a fantastic singer, too). I haven't seen Stephanie in a couple of years (I think she's been pretty busy writing and producing her TV series) but the same kudos apply to her – she's another top-notch voiceover artist. Come to think of it, what a great cast they put together for Sailor Moon! And the best part is that every sailor scout sounds uniquely true to who she is.

I haven't seen Terri Hawkes in a long time, but I thought she was just dynamite as Sailor Moon – very creative, very intuitive. And FUNNY. Lynda Ballantyne lives just around the corner from me, and I often run into her when I'm walking my dog. Linda's also exceptionally talented, and I thought she did a bang-up job replacing an already-established character – which, believe me, is NOT an easy thing to do.

MC: Do you yourself have any Sailor Moon merchandise as mementos of Sailor Jupiter?

SR: I have quite a few things that fans have given to me at Anime conventions. And they're all very cherished...

EcoReck: If fans ever see you in real life, do they ask for voice impressions of characters such as Lita?

SR: Oh yes, all the time. Especially the Jupiter! Thunder! Crash! bits – which are kind of hard to do in a crowded convention hall without feeling like a bit of a nutcase...

ChibiGinger: Did (Or you do) you know that there is a live action show and musicals?

SR: I didn't know that, no.

MC: What do you think made Sailor Moon a special cartoon when it first broke out onto the scene?

SR: I think it had to do with the fact that, finally, girls were being portrayed as gutsy and determined and empowered – and as real teenagers, with real problems and real issues. And they were allowed to truly express themselves, without holding back, without pretending to be sweet and polite all the time. If they were pissed off, they let it rip. If they were ecstatic, they let that rip, too. They brought home all the ups and downs, all the moods, all the trials and tribulations of being teenagers in North America.

MC: What do you think is Sailor Moon's legacy, 15 years later?

SR: Well, I hope it's shown teenage girls that they have the right to go for whatever they truly want to achieve – and that they should never EVER be held back by some antiquated definition of what girls can and cannot do. About twenty years ago, I heard about this interview they conducted with a bunch of six-year old girls in grade one. They were all asked what they wanted to be when they grew up. One little girl said, "I want to be a nurse or a teacher." The interviewer said, "Okay, what would you want to be if you were a boy?" The little girl said, "Well, if I was a boy… I could be anything in the WORLD!"

That was just so sad to me. So sad. And I have to hope that something as simple as a show like Sailor Moon has taught everyone that we can't go around putting limitations on people just because they happen to belong to a certain demographic.

Keep an eye out on Monday for Part II, where Susan talks more Sailor Moon, TinTin, Strawberry Shortcake, that beloved Canadian classic, The Raccoons, and much, much more! And a reminder to our other Moonie Bloggers: if you choose to use any part of this interview on your site, please credit Moon Chase and Susan Roman, and link back to this post!
